Why a Cosmetic Dentist Needs to Remove Tooth Enamel Before Placing Veneers

Finding the right cosmetic dentist is important. Many dental patients do not realize that general dentists can perform cosmetic procedures, making it an easy process for any patient who is in need of cosmetic services to find a dental professional to assist them with their cosmetic dental needs. Ready to learn more about dental veneers?

Popular cosmetic options

Learning the different cosmetic options from a cosmetic dentist is the first step for dental patients who want to make one or more cosmetic changes to their teeth. There are many different options to choose from, with each option working to correct a certain problem that prevents one from having a pleasant-looking smile. One of the more popular cosmetic treatment options patients are choosing is dental veneers, with two additional popular options being dental bonding and teeth whitening services.

About dental veneers

According to Healthline, dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that are attached to the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. They can be used to treat a number of tooth-related problems and only require one to make two different trips to the dental office. Some of the more popular reasons people are choosing this cosmetic treatment option are repairing chipped teeth, broken teeth, discolored teeth and making small teeth look larger.

In order for a dentist to place veneers on a patient's teeth, it is necessary for them to first remove part of the tooth’s enamel before placing the veneer. The average amount of enamel removed is about half a millimeter, which is about the thickness of a fingernail. In order to remove the enamel, the dentist will use a special dental tool to perform the process, which carefully grinds the enamel away. Since enamel does not regrow, those who are considering undergoing dental veneer placement need to make sure they are making the right choice for themselves.

There are two reasons why a dentist needs to remove a minimal amount of a tooth’s enamel before placing a veneer over it. The first is because the veneer needs to be bonded to the tooth and the only way to ensure the veneer will properly stay in place is to remove some of the tooth’s enamel. If no enamel is removed, the veneer will not stay in its proper place for as long a time. The second reason is that if no enamel is removed, the tooth being treated will not be the same thickness as the rest of the teeth. Removing enamel allows the placement of the veneer to look more natural and blend in well with the rest of the teeth.

Are veneers the right choice?

Ready to choose a cosmetic dentist to have one or more veneers placed on your teeth? This cosmetic solution for improving smiles is a popular one, as the entire placement process tends to only require patients to make two different dental appointments. Many patients choose to make appointments before or after work, as well as during their lunch break.
